So what are the facts concerning dental health in children?

Take a look at these points made by the Centers for Disease Control:
  • In 2003, Americans made about 500 million visits to the dentist, and an estimated $74 billion was spent on dental services.
  • Tooth decay is one of the most common infectious diseases among children.
    • 17% of children aged two-four years have already developed tooth decay.
    • By the age of eight, approximately 52% of children have experienced tooth decay.
Here are some tips to make sure your children aren’t spreading germs through their brushing habits.
  • Ensure that each child has his or her own toothbrush, clearly marked with identification. Do not allow children to share or borrow toothbrushes.
  • After children finish brushing, ensure that they rinse their toothbrushes thoroughly with tap water, allow them to air-dry.
  • Store toothbrushes in an upright position so they do not come into contact with other children’s toothbrushes.
  • Provide children with paper cups for rinsing after brushing. Do not allow them to share cups and ensure that they dispose of cups properly after a single use.
